They lived together in a beautiful home in Lawrence, Kansas, and Mary kept the home while John worked at the garage he co-owned. Life was perfect until the day of Sam, their younger son's, six month birthday. Mary woke in the night and saw a figure - apparently her husband - standing over Sam's crib. When she went downstairs and saw John asleep in front of the television she ran back to the nursery, shouting. John woke and ran after her only to find the nursery apparently empty of anyone but their infant son. When he noticed a drop of blood by the baby's head he looked up to find his wife on the ceiling, her stomach cut open. Moments later Mary's body burst into flames and John handed his elder son, Dean, the baby and told him to run. John's apparent attempt to save his wife failed and, the two young boys in tow, John set out to track and kill the thing that had killed his wife. But Mary's story didn't quite end there. More than twenty-two years later the boys, now grown, reunited and searching for their father, became aware of something happening in their old home. They returned to Lawrence to find a poltergeist had been attracted to the darkness in the house. The spirit got the better of Sam, locking Dean outside after he'd saved the owner and pinning the younger boy to the wall by the throat. Dean broke in just in time to see a flaming figure head for his brother but Sam stopped him from shooting at it - Sam could see it was Mary. She took a moment to greet each of her son's and then turned on the malevolent spirit, destroying her own in order to save Sam.
